El Cosmico, the beloved bohemian campground founded by hospitality visionary Liz Lambert, is transforming into the world's first 3D-printed hotel and residential development. Designed by the internationally acclaimed Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and constructed using ICON's pioneering large-scale 3D-printing technology, the project is more than an engineering milestone. It marks a turning point in how we think about architecture, hospitality, and the very act of creating spaces for people to experience.
Spanning more than 60 acres, the new development will feature 43 hotel units, 18 private 3D-printed residences, a restaurant, bathhouse, spa, expansive pool, and thoughtfully designed communal spaces that continue El Cosmico's long-standing spirit of bringing together art, nature, and culture. Hotel stays are expected to range from $200 to $445 per night, while the adjoining three and four-bedroom Sunday Homes, measuring 2,000 to 2,500 square feet, will be available for purchase starting at $2.29 million. Perhaps the biggest surprise isn't that a hotel can be 3D printed. It's how beautifully human the result promises to be.
Breaking Free from Straight Lines
Traditional construction has always demanded compromise. Curves are expensive. Domes require complex engineering. Organic forms often remain sketches because building them is simply too costly or time-consuming.
3D printing changes that equation.
Instead of relying on conventional walls and repetitive floor plans, ICON's Vulcan printer, a 46.5-foot-wide machine that stands 15.5 feet tall and weighs nearly 4.75 tons, prints the hotel one layer at a time. As its robotic arm moves across the site with remarkable precision, it gradually forms sweeping arches, rounded rooms, sculptural vaults, and flowing parabolic walls that would have been extraordinarily difficult and expensive to achieve using traditional construction methods.
Powering the process is Lavacrete, ICON's proprietary cement-based printing material engineered for strength, durability, and large-scale construction. Since every structure is printed under the open Texas sky, technicians continuously fine-tune the material mix to adapt to changing temperatures, humidity, and sunlight, ensuring every layer cures consistently while maintaining the structural performance and finish the project demands.
The result is architecture that feels less like something built on the landscape and more like something that has naturally emerged from it.
Bjarke Ingels describes the project as a conversation between El Cosmico's past and future. By embracing local colours, desert textures, and fluid geometry, the hotel becomes an extension of its environment rather than an interruption of it.
